Estonia, unfortunately, is TOP 5 “wife-beating” country in Europe. Police regards domestic violence towards women as a “family matter” and populaar critisism towards the subject is that violence against women is something that feminists like to talk about. To show that the probleem is real – first time in Estonian history on November 25th we organised a media operation where only famous men talked about the need to stop domestic violence towards women. This media operation has gained us thousands of likes and tens of thousands of clicks – but what is most important – the issue of violence towards women has been taken to Ministry level and work-groups have been formed to handle the subject. And all this started with a conference where men came out and said NO TO VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN on 25th of November 2013.
Eesti ühiskond on naistevastase lähisuhtevägivalla liider Euroopas. 9/10 perevägivalla juhtumist, kuhu sekkub politsei, on pandud toime mehe poolt naise suhtes. Naiste peksmine on normaale ja sageli naiste enda provotseeritud -nii arvab iga 3. online-lehekommentaar ajakirjanduses lugudele, kus räägitakse naistevastasest vägivallast. Naistevastase vägivalla vastu võitlemist on ühiskonnas peetud feministide agendaks. Esmakordselt Eestis olid mehed need, kes astusid 25.11.2013 meedias välja naistevastase lähisuhtevägivalla vastu.
