In spite of its relatively modern achievement, the selection of the image of a tree as its logo by the Institute of the Estonian Language conveys a connection to the land, to a simple, natural, as well as characteristically Estonian cognizance. In addition to the emotional background, the image also refers to how the language functions in today’s world. The tree, with its trunk and roots buried in the ground, symbolises the stability of the base structure of the language, since the branches, with their endless branching, are suitable for marking the isolated instances of the use of the language (for example, language acts, etc.).
